The Arts and Museums team is delighted to be able to offer a series of free, hands-on workshops specially for older kids (age 13-17) who have a particular interest in art and craft – maybe you are doing qualifications or maybe you just love being creative, either way, come along this summer and work and learn from a professional artist/maker in a relaxed and friendly environment. We are covering the following subjects: Jewellery, stained glass, printmaking, ceramics and portraiture and you can book just one or or all of the workshops, but please note, jewellery is a two-day course.
Dates & Times:
Classes will take place at Gracefield Arts Centre , 28 Edinburgh Rd, Dumfries, or Kirkcudbright Galleries, St Mary’s Street from 10.30am to finish around 3/3.30pm you can stay on until 4pm to finish work or hang out.
Gracefield:
Thursday 7 & Friday 8 July: An introduction to jewellery design and making with Sarah Rogers. Sarah runs her own studio and, in this workshop, she’ll look at techniques to create a small piece to take home (8).
Friday 22 July: Printmaking – artist Sarah Keast shows you how to tackle techniques including collograph and monotype. These lively and adaptable methods just need you to think about texture and line and let you imagination go, with a nod to experimenting and free expression (10).
Tuesday 26 July: Printmaking with Sarah Keast. A further day to try these technique for the first time, or you can use this as follow up to develop your ideas if you’ve been at day one (10).
Wednesday 27 July: One day portraiture with Blossom Mccaig – using each other as models, or self- portrait art Blossom Mccauig looks at the classic techniques of capturing the drawn image. Don’t worry about your drawing skills, it’s the ideal chance to learn something new or develop your technique in a relaxed and friendly way (12).
Thursday 28 July: Portrait Projects. Artist Blossom Mccuaig leads a further day exploring drawing using a dressed model/self-portrait to explore imagery using different surfaces like canvas, tote bag and t-shirt to create finished work with your unique art (12).
Thursday 3 August Stained Glass. Artist Andy Brooke takes you through the basics of working with glass to create a small project in a day. Colour and light captured in a one-off copper foil artwork (10).
Thursday 11 August Ceramics. Abbie La Rooy is back this summer with a clay workshop exploring masks, faces, gargoyles – an opportunity to explore different decorative techniques, colour, pattern and build up relief working in both 2D and 3D (10).
Tuesday 16 and Thursday 18 August free art day at Gracefield – try your hand at various options, still life painting, printmaking, drawing – an open house to explore… (15)
