Gracefield Art Centre and Kirkcudbright Galleries are offering free arts workshops for 12-16 year olds during the summer. These workshops will be led by artists and will give you an opportunity to experiment with different art techniques including printmaking, ceramics and jewellery.
Join us this summer to take part in free, hands-on art workshops for 12-16 year olds. If you love being creative and would like to learn from a professional artist/maker in a relaxed and friendly environment, this programme is for you! We are offering workshops in jewellery, printmaking, ceramics, graphic art and you can even have a go at creating your own art materials! All materials will be supplied. If you have your own sketchbook you can bring that in too, or other source materials (this can be on your phone) to make the most of your days. Lunch and snacks will be provided by Gracefield/Kircudbright Galleries Café and travel expenses on public transport are covered. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.

Thursday 4th July Printmaking using tetrapak and acetate Pamela Grace will lead this workshop, which is designed to be a simple introduction to printmaking. Etching needles will be used to draw directly onto acetate and recycled materials, which are then inked up and run through an etching press. Collaged paper can be added to create colour. This process can be very experimental and offers plenty of opportunity to develop your creativity using printmaking.
Thursday 11th July Mythical Ceramics Inspired by pottery forms from Ancient Greece, you will create a coil-built vessel with ceramicist Frances Ross, incorporating sgraffito imagery, based on ancient mythology or your own contemporary stories. The vessels will be taken away to be fired and glazed and will be available to collect from the gallery.
Thursday 18th July Graphic Art and Illustration This workshop, led by Blossom McCuaig, will focus on narrative art forms, namely graphic novels and illustration. Blossom will examine and explain key concepts such as character creation, storytelling and adaptation. Putting these ideas into practice, participants will then produce their own comic panels or illustrations. This workshop is for anyone interested in literature and the visual arts.
Thursday 25th July Silver Charms Sybil Williamson from Solway Silver will introduce the amazing silver clay technique, and you will have the opportunity to create your own charms to hang from your own lapel pin to wear on clothing, bags, scarves, or hats.

Thursday 8th August Paint, Crayon, Paint and Pastel Making Lucy Lee from the Old Mill Studio will show you how to make your own set of natural paints, crayons and pastels from foraged and non-toxic, biodegradable pigments. From bashing up stones to mulling your own beautiful colours, this workshop will help you to make your very own set of art materials.

Friday 16th August Narrative Portraits Blossom McCuaig will lead this workshop which will look at how different materials, light, composition, and pose are used to communicate meaning in portraits. Using a variety of materials including pencils, charcoal, chalk, gouache, and ink, you will experiment to create illustrative, expressive portraits.
