Have you ever felt that you can’t be you? That you can’t be your true self? That you have to hide your identity?
I have.
And so have hundreds of LGBT Young People across Dumfries and Galloway and Wider Scotland.
Despite the fact that it is 2021, we still face stigma, bullying and harassment for who we are and who we love. We spend years fighting with ourselves over our identity only to fight with others once we come out.
But amongst the difficulties, the fighting, and the challenges, I have discovered something amazing.
A community.
A community who unconditionally accept who I am and like me, for me. The real me. We are diverse, unique, loving and LGBT. I have never felt more able to be who I want to be than when I am with them. It’s amazing.
I discovered this community at the LGBT Gathering run by the YES and LGBT Youth. Over the days I was there all of us were able to be free! We could talk about things we couldn’t outside that space and be truly honest.
We were able to come together and create real change for LGBT Young People.
I no longer feel alone, or that I can’t be me. I know who I am and I am proud of it. I am part of an amazing community and “together, we can do so much.”
